Temp Agency Companies

Filed under: Temp Agency by Greg Heslin, November 5th, 2007 9:00 am

Temp agencies have taken on the role as mediators between businesses and potential employees, striving to provide quality workers to help businesses in their times of need. Due to the unique relationship between these two structures, it is often difficult to determine which structure is in charge and whose rules to follow. In response to this problem, many temp agencies have started to sponsor both temps and businesses, taking the guesswork out of the equation. These super agencies then have the ability to hire more people at a faster rate, while providing helpful networking to their clients.

The American Staffing Association (ASA), which was founded in 1966 to promote the legal and ethical practices of all companies in the staffing industry, spells out all of the rules and regulations pertaining to temp agency companies. The ASA has over 15,000 members who account for more than eighty-five percent of the staffing industry sales in the U.S. The ASA website also allows potential temps to search through companies, helping them find employment through an accredited agency. Another accredited organization that sponsors various staffing companies is the Independent Staffing Alliance (ISA). Founded in 1962, the ISA is the oldest independently owned staffing firm in the U.S. The website allows visitors to search through members and includes detailed services that are provided.

There are some clear front-runners who are known to provide quality employees to businesses around the country. SKILLED Group is one of the largest providers of staffing to businesses today. The Group is the industry leader in providing specialty workers to businesses in need of part-time workers for special projects or high-traffic times. SKILLED provides workers in a variety of fields, including manufacturing, government and defense, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. The agency works on a global level, allowing networking with companies all over the world and providing a solid clientele.

Kelly Services is another company that provides temporary staffing to businesses in need. Founded in 1946, Kelly places over 750,000 employees in positions each year. There are offices in thirty-three countries used to find work nearly anywhere in the world. Kelly Services specializes in finding work in accounting, engineering, law, science, education, health care, and other fields. This Fortune 500 Company was ranked number 407 on Forbes list and has received high recognition from some of the biggest companies around, including Intel, Johnson & Johnson, and the American Red Cross.

Manpower is also a popular provider in the part-time staffing industry. The agency works in over seventy countries to lend their sixty years experience to businesses in need of workers. Manpower has nearly 400,000 clients from all over the world who use its services each year. The agency has the unique opportunity to hire workers abroad rather than limiting them to one particular area and claims to place 312 people in jobs every minute.

There are also smaller companies that provide high-quality workers on a lesser scale. Advantage Recruitment is a well-known provider of employment in the industrial sector, manufacturing, trade, construction, and many other fields. Advantage looks for both part-time and full-time work for their clients and offers many services to fit their clients’ needs.

Complete Staff Solutions is another company that provides workers to businesses on a smaller scale. The agency sponsors both employers looking for workers and employees, resulting in easy transactions and clearly defined rules.

Nowadays temp agency companies are working hard to provide quality employees to businesses all over the world. With great efforts from organizations like ASA and ISA, temps and temp agencies are given more protection and better rights, thus providing better services. Whether it is a large corporation or a small start-up, temp agencies are becoming more efficient business structures that provide work to thousands of previously unemployed people in the U.S.

What is a Temp Agency?

Today, many businesses that have high-traffic seasons or cyclical work schedules are looking to temp agencies to outsource short-term jobs and projects to knowledgeable individuals looking for work. Temp agencies, short for temporary work agencies, provide businesses with workers on a case-by-case basis to perform the necessary tasks at the business’s most crucial times. They also provide a cost efficient way for companies to conduct business without having to hire a full-time staff. Due to the nature of their work, most temp agencies hire workers in the fields of health care, accounting, technical jobs, or secretarial positions. Although, there are some agencies that hire substitute teachers and day laborers for short-term work.

Joining a temp agency can have many benefits and allow for flexibility and diversity in work. Many people in the entertainment business work as temps because it allows them to make time for auditions or other jobs. Writers and artists are also good candidates for temp positions because the extra work gives them financial support, allowing them more time to work on their projects. Young professionals are also likely candidates to be temps, especially if they are unsure of what field they would like to join, because of the great networking they are exposed to while working for various companies. Of course, working for a temp agency is not for everyone. Individuals should be flexible and willing to work in a variety of different jobs. Many temps can be fired or laid off without notice if they complete their job ahead of schedule, making their financial situations difficult to manage. Also, many temps are only hired in certain seasons, making the market competitive and scarce.

The job of a temp agency can be difficult because of its role as mediator between employees and employers. Sometimes it is difficult for agencies to find enough individuals who are qualified and willing to work in such an unstable environment. However, temp agencies are generally easy to find and require little effort to join. Most agencies only require applicants to take a set of tests that evaluate the individuals’ competence levels, usually in the secretarial and clerical fields. After completing these tests, the individuals’ scores are stored in the agencies’ databases so they can refer to them any time they need. After temps are placed in an agency’s database, they will be contacted when a job comes up for which they are qualified. The temps receive a detailed report that includes the company’s name, a job description, the supervisor’s name, what to wear, the hours, pay, etc. The individuals can then choose to accept or decline the job offer, in which case they will either report to work or go back into the database and wait for another offer.

Since temps are bound to the rules set before them by their agency, not the company they are hired by, there is a certain separation felt between companies and the temps they hire. For example, temps have the right to refuse to complete certain tasks if they are not specifically spelled out in their job description because to the rights legally given to them through Occupational Healthy and Safety laws. Due to these circumstances, there is an even larger demand for legitimate agencies to exist that are willing to work in tandem with businesses to establish jobs to fit to each company’s standards. Two organizations that help provide qualified workers and promote proper ethical practices are the American Staffing Association (ASA) and the Independent Staffing Alliance (ISA). Both of these organizations were founded in order to provide better and more legitimate temp agencies for businesses across the U.S. The ASA and ISA each have thousands of members they sponsor to help better the staffing industry and supply quality workers to those in need.

Although there are both benefits and downfalls in all temp agencies, the business continuously improving. With the help of organizations like ASA and ISA to establish clear rights for both businesses and employees, temp agencies are becoming more stable structures that run more smoothly and provide better work for individuals in need.
